Key Employee

A defined IRC category that triggers special funding limits inside 401(h) accounts.

Full definition

Under IRC §416, a key employee is generally an officer with compensation above a threshold, a 5% owner, or a 1% owner with compensation above $150,000. 401(h) accounts must separately account for medical benefits for key employees, and contributions to fund their medical benefits are subject to additional limits.
